Take Your Time
“Do not be in a hurry to succeed. What would you have to live for afterwards? Better make the horizon your goal; it will always be ahead of you.”- William Makepeace Thackeray, novelist
It takes more than a day to be an expert in your chosen field. A tower is not constructed in a day. A road is not constructed in a day. The biggest and most profitable companies in the world are not built in a day. Why are you now in a hurry to succeed? Why? Why? Why?
Is it because of the celebrities you see on the TV?
Is it because of the athletes you are watching play brilliantly on the TV?
Or, is it the guy you saw yesterday riding the finest car on the street?
Don’t let those things push you to want to succeed overnight. There is no such thing as overnight success. If you want to be really successful, get ready for a very long ride to the land of success. Yes, a very long ride.
Real success doesn’t happen by accident. It takes time. It takes more than 10,000 hours of meticulous, painstaking practice to reach your goal, according to experts. It takes more than ten years of hard and intentional studies before you can call yourself an expert. So, again, why are you now in a hurry to succeed? Take your time.
Take your time. Take your time to plan, to think, to figure out what you want to do with your life, to figure out where you are going, to prepare yourself mentally for the rough ride. The road to success is rough, not smooth.
Once you figure out what you want to do in life, the next step is to put together a comprehensive, flexible, and reasonable plan to get it done. A comprehensive plan is important because a goal without execution is nothing. You need a map. You need a strategic plan to get things done. Are you ready? Are you ready for the rough ride? Are you ready to commit yourself to a life-long journey to success? Are you ready to invest the time (maybe 10,000 hours or more) to make your dreams happen? Are you?
If you are, know this: It takes time to become an expert. It takes time to reach your goal. It takes time to become a celebrity. It takes time to earn a PhD. It takes time to move from a novice to an expert. It takes time to learn how to drive a car. It takes time for babies to walk without dropping to the ground. It takes time.
In order to succeed in anything, whether it’s flying an airplane or becoming a surgeon, or a soccer player, or a school teacher, it doesn’t happen overnight. It comes with depression, with lots of failures, with anxiety, with lots of preparations, with distractions, and with self-doubt. But if you remain dedicated to making your dreams come true, success is within your reach. You can do it.
Are you ready to commit yourself to a life-long learning?
Are you ready to do whatever it takes (legitimately) to make your dreams come true?
If you are, you are on the right road.
