The Right Environment

The right environment is an environment where you are surrounded by positive, disciplined, supportive, and committed people. No one succeeds alone; you need people to help you grow and develop.

No matter how good or smart you are, without the right system- that is, the right leader, the right coworkers, the right manager, the right mentor, the right customers, and the right stakeholder, you will find it difficult to do very well. The right environment is what people need in order to do well in life. The right environment is what people need in order to grow. Without the right environment, no matter how intelligent you are, you will struggle to succeed. For example, when you place a person who is really talented in the wrong environment, his or her talent will start to deteriorate. On the other hand, when you place the same person or a person with an average intelligence in the right environment and in the right job, they will do very well. So if you want to do well, look for the right environment and the right job. The right environment is the key to a sustainable growth.

As Earl Nightingale once said, “Our environment, the world in which we live and work, is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations.”

We now live in a world where we expect everybody to be a superstar. The question that nobody is asking is: “Do we have the right system in place to help people succeed?” In other words, do we have the right environment for people to grow? Do we have the right environment for people to explore? Do we have the right environment for people to take risks? Do we have the right environment for people to bring out the best in themselves? Do we have them?

If people are not doing well in their jobs, it does not mean that they are stupid or that they are not intelligent enough to handle the job. They are smart. They don’t have the right tools; and they are in the wrong place. For managers, it is important to ask yourselves the following questions before you think of firing anyone:

  • Are they in the right environment?
  • Are they working with the right people?
  • Are they doing the right job?
  • Do they have the right skills to complete the job?
  • Do they need further training?
  • Do they need a mentor?

If you want to enjoy your job, you need the right environment to excel. If not, read the quote below:

According to B. F. Skinner, a renowned psychologist, “If you are old, don’t try to change yourself, change your environment.”

If you don’t like where you are working right now, you have three options:

  1. Change the job, if possible.
  2. Change how you think about your job.
  3. Leave the company. It is up to you.

Remember, there is no such thing as a perfect environment. It is how you think about where you are now that makes it perfect or imperfect. I strongly encourage you to make it perfect.
