“When you think everything is someone else’s fault, you will suffer a lot.”- Dalai Lama
“The difficulty we have in accepting responsibility for our behavior lies in the desire to avoid the pain of the consequences of that behavior.”- Dr. M. Scott Peck, psychiatrist
“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.”– Sigmund Freud, psychoanalyst
What does it mean to take personal responsibility?
The power of taking personal responsibility is when you honestly hold yourself accountable for your success, for your failure, and for your future decisions. People don’t like to take responsibility for their actions because we love to blame people for our mess. Stop blaming and own your mess.
It means you have decided to master your life, and to take full control of your life, regardless of the results.
It means you are responsible for your success and failure. You are ready to learn from your mistakes and that you will refrain from blaming others for your mess. You won’t sit in your room and cry for the whole day.
On the other hand, if you fail to take responsibility for your life, if you fail to control your life, if you allow people to control you, if you fail to control your environment, people, your environment, or circumstances will control you.
How to take Personal Responsibility.
Before you start, before you think about taking personal responsibility, you should assess what you can control, know what you cannot control, measure what you can control, and take action. Don’t play the blame game. Take action. Focus on your actions.
Take responsibility for your life if you want to be successful. If you don’t take full responsibility for your life, you are refusing yourself a valuable experience that can be useful in the future. When anything happens to you (good or bad), do not blame anyone, accept it as a part of life.
As I wrote before, life is not without obstacles. Assess what happened and learn from it. Don’t ignore problems, solve problems. If you ignore problems, they will grow bigger.
Once you have succeeded in taking responsibility for your life, you have mastered your life. You are now in control of your life.
If you want to be successful in life, you have to take control of your life. If not, people will do it for you.
