Regret: is a feeling of sadness or disappointment, which is caused by something that has happened or something that you have done or not done. If you regret something that you have done, you wish that you had not done it.”- Collins CoBuild
All of that being said, here are 6 productive ways to deal with regret:
Practice positive self-talk. Whenever you realize that negative thoughts are pouring into your head, quickly flip the switch to a positive button. Learn to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Negative thoughts poison your spirit, they limit your dreams. Positive thoughts, on the other hand, nurture your dreams, and they clean up your system. Positive thoughts feed your brain with the right food. Positive thoughts are what your whole body need, not negative thoughts. Joe Osteen said, “You can change your world by changing your words. Remember, death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
Encourage yourself. Regardless of what has happened, regardless of what you have done in the past, never stop loving yourself. Stop beating yourself up for your previous mistakes. Remember, nobody is perfect. I am not perfect. You are not perfect. Nobody will ever be perfect. Love who you are. Accept who you are- unconditionally. Start to encourage yourself. Celebrate yourself. Practice what I call “self-love.” If you don’t love yourself, nobody will care about you. Love is contagious.
Focus on positive thoughts. It is very easy to get stuck in the past instead of focusing on now and tomorrow. People focus on negative things and on what they have done wrong. What a waste of time! They never focus or think about what they have done right. Focus and celebrate what you have done right. Always think about good things. They will help you to overcome what you are going through. According to James Allen, “Good thoughts bear good fruit, and bad thoughts bad fruit.”
Help others. People need help. You can help. When you help other people, you are helping yourself. To heal from regret, help others to find their purpose in life. The art of helping others is the real food for the soul that wants to heal and find happiness. You find more happiness in what you do for others than what you take from others. Be a giver, not a taker. Zig Ziglar once said, “You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
Believe in yourself. No matter what you have been through in life, believe in yourself. Believe you can still win. Believe there is still a chance for you to succeed. Don’t let your past mistakes hold you back. Move on! You cannot change the past. You cannot change your past losses. You can change “now.” What you do now will determine your tomorrow. Don’t hope for tomorrow, plan for tomorrow. Don’t doubt yourself. Believe in yourself. James Allen said, “Thoughts of doubt and fear never accomplish anything, and never can.”
Focus on the future. Don’t regret the mistakes you have made in the past. Don’t dwell on them. They won’t help you, only hurt you. Focus on what is next for you. Don’t dwell on what happened yesterday. Focus on what is happening now. Focus on what is going to happen tomorrow. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is yet to come. Life is about moving forward, not backward. If you want to succeed, think forward, not backward.
